A child is considered to be healthy and normal if he eats properly without any fuss; sleeps well without any disturbance both during the day and at night; is playful and looks contented and happy. But at times it is not all that rosy and pleasant the child does feel unwell, looks unwell and uncomfortable for some reason or the other.

These are called the conditions of sickness and discomfort, when a child needs immediate attention and treatment. Sometimes these conditions may not be perceptible even to the parents as children generally do not complain and remain busy with their playful activities in spite of being unwell.

The first sign of illness that a child may manifest is his refusal to eat and to play, or a child appears restless during sleep, and may look dissipated for no apparent reasons. Such outward behavioral changes and manifestations are the sure signs that all is not well with the child, and that he needs help.

The first sign of ill health is any marked change in the child’s usual behaviour. If the condition recurs time and again close observation of the child and study of his antecedents may become necessary.
