The Tropical Thorn and Scrubs

(i) Vegetation:

i. In regions of less than 70 cm of rainfall, natural vegetation consists of thorny trees and bushes.


ii. This type of vegetation is found in the North-Western part of India, semiarid areas of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

iii. Acacias, palms, euphorbias and cacti are the main plant species.

iv. Trees are scattered and have long plant roots penetrating deep into the soil and spreading in a radial pattern to find water.

v. Leaves are mostly small to minimize evaporation.


vi. In drier areas, only thorny trees and scrubs grow.

(ii) Wildlife:

In these forests the common animals found are rats, mice, rabbits, fox, wolf, tiger, lion, goats, wild ass, horses and camels.
