Lumbering is less developed in the equatorial region becase:

(l) The trees are hard wooded and have less commercial value.

(ii) There are multiple species of trees; important trees are mahogany, quebra­cho, etc.

(iii) The forests are dense luxuriant and the forests are inaccessible.

(v) The region is infested with insects, pests and wild animals.

(vi) The forests are dark and gloomy as the trees have a broad canopy, so the sunlight does not reach the ground.

(vii) It is difficult to construct roads and railways.

On the other hand, lumbering is well developed in the cool temperate zone in the coniferous belt in Northern Canada, Norway, Sweden, etc. because

(i) The trees are soft wooded and have a great commercial value.

(ii) Species of trees are a few spruce, pine, fir, birch, etc.

(iii) The forests are accessible.

(v) There is no danger of forest fires and wild animals.
