Of trees, the Banyan and the Pipal trees are sacred to Lord Vishnu and the Bila tree to Shiva. Of plants, the most sacred is the Tulsi, believed to be an incarnation of the wife of Vishnu and every pious Vaishnav takes care to plant and water a Tulsi plant in his compound.

The plant being an incarnation of Lakshmi, its marriage is performed every year with. More popular is the marriage of the Tulsi plant with the Saligrama. Plant worship is traced to the Vedas.

Of grass, the Durva (Agrostis liearis) and the Kusa are sacred and are used in ceremonial worship.
