The following are the values of Co- curricular Activities in a pupil’s life:

1. Sublimation of Instincts:

Gregarious instinct in the adolescent is very predominant. This tendency expresses the desire of the growing boys to behave socially. If no opportunities are provided to them, they will form their own groups. Various co-curricular activities, e.g., self-government, social service leagues, scouting, etc., will be very conducive to sublimate this instinct by providing them a field for doing something socially worthwhile through group activities.

2. Social Training:

These activities are very useful in giving training in ‘Art of Living’. According to the Secondary Education Commission, the ‘Art of Living’ is a much more comprehensive concept than the acquisition of knowledge.

3. Civic Training:

The school should be training ground for democracy. It should be organise and administered on democratic lines. Students in the manner will have opportunities and responsibilities somewhat similar in a small way to those they will have later as grown up citizens. The more the students run the school administration the more they feel that the school belongs to them and they belong to the school. Discipline becomes self-discipline. The students remain busy and different kinds of activities develop their talents in different directions. They make laws for the various societies and come to realize the need for showing respect to other school laws.

Many programmes have to be organised. Man; situations have to be faced in the running of various societies. All these inculcate in the students the virtues of initiative, clear thinking, originality, and resourcefulness good judging power, tolerance, patience, enthusiasm, self-confidence and reliance which arc very essential in a leader.

10. Physical Development:

Games, N.C.C Physical Drill, etc., contribute to the physical development of the individual.

11. Scope-for Self-expression:

Someone has a talent for writing, another for speaking, a third for music and so on. These activities bring out these qualities and develop them. This self-discovery and self-knowledge all tell them in what direction they should turn their ability and talent to advantage and help them to make rise vocational choice.

12. Assistance in Guidance and Counseling:

“Students get opportunities to know their assets and, liabilities. The teachers and especially the school counselor come to know them better and accordingly (suggest programmes for their development).

13. Learning and Earning:

Many activities provide opportunities to the students to earn also.

14. Preparation for a Vacation:

Some students develop certain vocational skills which prepare them for a vocation.

15. Cordial Relation with the Community:

Social service activities by the students bring appreciation from the community.
