What are the Main Problems of University Education in India?

Main Problems of University Education:

These are stated as under:

1. Falling standard of education.

2. Wastage in our universities which is as high as 50 per cent.

3. Imbalances on the ratio of students studying humanities and social sciences and science and related faculties. The ratio is as 40 per cent in arts and 20 per cent in science.

4. Foreign language as the medium of instruction in many educational institutes.

5. Mushroom growth of college and universities.

6. Irrelevance of higher education.

7. Uneconomic nature of higher education.

8. Undue importance to examination.

9. Lack of guidance.

10. Student activities’.

11. Political interference.

12. Lack of library’ and other facilities.

Major Recommendations Regarding Reforms

(1) Selective Admissions:

Since the demand for higher education will be much larger than the provision that can be for it or is needed on the basis of manpower needs, a system of selective admissions will have to be adopted.

(2) Part-time Education:

Opportunities for part-time education (correspondence courses, evening colleges) should be extended widely and should include courses in science and technology.

(3) College Size:

A college should normally have a minimum enrolment of500 and it would be preferable to raise it to 1,000 or more in as many colleges as possible.
