Professional activities are essential part of the school curriculum. Teaching is a system of activities in which knowledge is imparted to an individual by another. It is also a social activity and a process of development. Professional activities include personal characteristics, reactions. Actually profession means teaching, learning and instruction. It may be called teaching strategy.

Teachers perform their professional activities where leadership is the task of profession, which is performed for the development of the children. The professional activities aimed at the achievement of learning and practical in such a manner as to respect the students-intellectual integrity and capacity for the reasoning.

Action research is organised, investigative activity aimed towards the study and constructive change of a given endeavour by individuals or group concerned with such change and improvement. It is beneficial both for the teacher and taught for the modification in their behaviour. It gives Inspirations to all i.e. teachers, inspectors, administrators and students. It is more practical than theoretical.

Seminars are organised from time to time to discuss the problem, suggestion and improvement in the teaching work, profession, administration or management of the school. Hence, the experts of their field discuss the difficulties and take suggestions for the future in the educational system. The teachers in-service attend these seminars and put their suggestions.

Basic Need for Professional Activities in a School System:

Professional activities of a teacher add to the teacher’s, strength. Teachers have to plan activities with clear objectives and implement in a systematic manner. These activities could comprise teaching, reading, discussing, doing research, giving lectures, organising seminars and workshops, writing articles, reviews and papers for professional journals, editing papers, journals and books, providing, counseling, guiding the choice of students, preparing instructional materials, preparing new instruments, apparatus, improving apparatus and instruments etc.

Teachers are dependent on Government or formal institution like NCERT, NIEPA, NCTE etc. for their training and development. Teachers need to explore the possibilities of self-development through continuous upgrading of their competence, knowledge and skill using local resources or working with NGOs. The self-reliance developed by the teacher provides him the confidence to take up more challenging tasks and look clearly at the goals of development.

Most of the professional activities give a focus and enhance the value of work due to organisation, precession accuracy and debate with constructive criticism. Being a social activity education has to take into consideration the context of educational setting, the wider society and the objectives of the institutions. Teachers need to capitalise on media learning resources while designing and providing inputs to children of the school.

Teachers can use their leisure hours with an artisan to acquire additional skill such as repairing house hold goods like TV, radio etc. They could also start some creative activities like magazine editing etc.
