The constitution maintains the independence of the Public Service Commission in several ways:

(i) The Chairman or a member of the Commission can be removed from office in the same manner as the judges of the Supreme Court.

(ii) The conditions of Service of a member of the Public Service Commission shall not be varied to his disadvantage during his tenure;

(iii) The expenses of the Commission are charged on the Consolidated Fund or India or of the state

(iv) Certain disabilities are imposed upon the Chairman and members of the Commission with respect to future employment under the Government.

Thus, on ceasing to hold office:

i. The chairman of the Union Public Service Commission shall be in eligible for further employment either under the Government of India or under the Government of a state.

ii. The chairman of a State Public Service Commission shall be eligible for appointment as the chairman or any other member of the Union Public Service Commission or as the Chairman of any other State Public Service Commission, but for any other
employment either under the Government of India or under the Government of a State.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

iii. A member other than the Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission shall be eligible for appointment as the chairman of the State Public Service Commission, but not for any other employment either under the Government of India or under the Government of a state.

iv. A member other than the Chairman of a State Public Service Commission shall be eligible for appointment as the Chairman or any other member of the Union Public Service Commission or as the Chairman of that or any other State Public Service Commission, but not for any other employment either under the Government of India or under the Government of a state.
