Yoga means union. Union with who it is with the Self or Soul it is a union of the body, the life, the mind and the soul. All of them are acting in their own way. If they are united and act harmoniously then the man becomes a person of great distinction.

The aim of life is to realize and manifest truth, beauty and bliss because this is the Summum Bonum of life. Again body, life, mind and soul being united and becomes an individual being.

The individual being, in course of time, is united with the universal being. This is the meaning of Yoga in a nutshell, to unite with the universal soul there are many ways. They are; raja yoga, hatha yoga, tantra-yoga, jnana yoga, bhakti yoga and karma yoga .The aim of life in other ways is to understand the divine plan and act accordingly.

It is discussed earlier regarding a general concept of yoga. Since the aim of yoga is to attain divinity in human life yet there are many ways for that. It may be kept in one’s mind that yoga does not mean only yogasanas or only meditation, yoga has a full-fledged approach for the integral human being. But that is given different approaches.

In course of yogic practices, sages have done many experiments. Jnana, karma and bhakti are given predominance alternatively for the development and manifestation of one’s highest personality. Accordingly they are three different paths known as jnanayoga, karma yoga and Bhakti yoga. Importance to body and mind is given in raja yoga.

Development of mind to its highest stage by uniting with the soul is jnana yoga. The attainment of the inner self is the aim of jnana yoga. Absolute self surrender under the feet of the worshipped one is bhakti which aims at living in saketa or goloka etc. Karma means work for the divine and surrender to the divine is the aims of karma yoga.

An aimless person is swayed away by whims and caprice. That happens because of the reflection of lower nature. Our nature is neither good nor bad. There is no one in this world that is either good or bad.

It is the Nature’s higher or lower condition that acts which becomes predominant in our life or mind to direct our body to act accordingly. But people attribute a person as good or bad.

These are all the play of three basic nature of the creation. They are sativa, rajas and tamas; sativa is pure and white in colour, rajas is dynamic; force and red in colour, tamas is inactive, sloth and dark (black) in colour these ‘guanaco’s qualities being predominant in a person and prompt one to act according to the properties of the qualities.

So it is the | yoga which harmonizes the qualities and brings truth, harmony, beauty and bliss to human life. The basic principle of yoga is to bring this highest achievement to man restoring the equilibrium of qualities sativa, rajas and tamas.
