It goes beyond doubt to mention that development of technologies from time to time has provided comfort, happiness to human beings technology delivers new products which ultimately results in modifying the neighboring environment.

However, almost technologies results in a number of side effects on the environment: which produces lot of problems. It is worth mentioning some such examples.

Mining projects may destroy entire ecological balance in the region, hydro-electric projects changes the environmental ecological picture, ground water exploration may result in lowering of the water table, technologies of refrigeration and air conditioning has led to depletion of ozone layer through chlorofluorocarbons thus causing threats to human life.

Technologies need to be knowledgeable about their feasible impact on the environment. The technologies must have all understanding of the assimilative capacity of the environment in the area of their application.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

In view of the examples mentioned as above, it is very essential that technical education should include some form of environmental education. Technologies should be able to assess and quantify likely impact on the environment, and also to devise measures to mitigate any adverse impact of the technology.

The role of technologists in the protection of environment is not merely to be aware of and be able to talk of the environment but should be able to assess the environmental implications of his own technological creations plans, designs, structures and devises.

The technologists should have an environmental orientation which should give him some background of the environmental concerns but also should have a specialized training of environmental impacts and thus able to produce appropriate environmental-friendly technologies. This is only possible when every technologist is trained in the field of environmental requirement.
