Design of Lecture Room-cum-Laboratory

As is clear from the name of the laboratory that this plan combines the laboratory with classroom where teacher can carry out his function of imparting education to the students. This is considered to be one of an economical kind of science laboratory, as two functions can be carried out in such kind of laboratory. Main features of design of this plan are as follows:-

i. This laboratory consists of a room having dimensions of 45’*25′, which is being divided into two equal portions. Out of these two portions, one can be utilized in the form of laboratory while other in the form of lecture room. Such division should be performed in such respect that there should be space of 40 students in the laboratory portion, by which majority of the students can get opportunity to indulge in the practical works simultaneously.

ii. Thickness of walls of the room should be lava’ which should be constructed of durable material. At least up to a height of 3′ from the floor, walls should be plastered and painted with appropriate kind of paint. Floor of the room should be made up of cement and it should be slightly slanting by which authorities will find it easy to get it washed properly. To avoid any lodging or dirt, it is recommended that floor should be round cornered.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

iii. To ensure that large number of students get entered and get existed from the rooms simultaneously, there should be provision of at least two doors in the laboratory. One out of these doors should be situated near the lecture room while other should exist near laboratory. Doors should be wide enough by which students do not find difficult to get entered in it.

iv. For proper ventilation, there should be provision of two or three windows of the outside of doors. It is necessary to create one window near seating accommodation. To ensure that inner window sills can be used as shelves, windows should be constructed in such a manner that they get open outside the room. For darkening the room, a system of window blinds can be used.

Furnishing Lecture Room:

Proper provision of black board should be made in the lecture room, which should have dimensions of 10’x4′. At a distance of three feet from the blackboard, a table should be placed out, which should be teacher’s table, which can also be used for demonstration work.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Proper provision of dual tables and chairs should be there in the lecture room, by which students can get comfortable seating accommodation. For this purpose, atleast twenty tables and forty chairs should be made. A shelf for books can be provided at sufficient height to go under the table while sitting.

Tables and chairs of iron and wood can be used for this purpose, however, it is necessary that they should be properly painted and should have a smooth and flat surface. It is also necessary that tables should not have sloping surface, otherwise, students will find it difficult to place various objects on them. On the tables, grooves for pens and pencils can be provided to the students.

Not only this, the height of tables and chairs should be appropriate and they should be arranged systematically. The chairs should be placed at comfortable distance from each other, as a result of which, no student or even teacher find it difficult to pass through them. At all the sides, space of around 21/a’ to 3V2′ should be arranged, otherwise, students will find it difficult to do movements in any way.

Table chair seating arrangement should be preferred to a gallery at the school stage, as it is quite expensive to make arrangement of a gallery. But proper provision should be made of the adequate number of seats and tables in the lecture room, as without it, students will not be able to feel comfortable.

Furnishing Laboratory Room:

In this room, a large wall black board should be provided which should have a dimension of 10’x4′. For performing various kinds of practical works, atleast provision of six tables should be done, which should have flat surface. Dimension of these tables should be 6’x3′.

In between the black board and practical table, there should be sufficient space. They should be placed in such a position by which atleast four students can use them at a time. The top of the practical table should be covered with lead, as sometimes students use it to put various articles required by them during the experiment.

In front of the black board one small table should be arranged, which should be place out to be used by teacher. Teacher can make use of this table for any purpose, e.g., for demonstration purpose or for putting various articles. There should be atleast three sinks in the room, out of which, two should be placed out for students.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

One of them should be placed in the window recess while the other in recess of the wall. Each of the sinks should be provided with a draining board by which water can get tripped over the sink. In the recesses in the walls, balances and almirahs should be placed out.

On either side of the recess, reagents shelves can be placed conveniently for the purpose of putting balances. There should be atleast eight almirahs in the room, each having a dimension of 7’x5′, in which various equipments and apparatuses can be stored safely.
