Design of All Purpose Science Room

This kind of laboratory can be used both for theoretical and practical purposes for all subjects or branches of science. It is in accordance with the requirement and needs that size of the laboratory can vary. However, if number of students is forty then size of laboratory should be 45’x25′.

With the objective of bringing about an improvement in the efficiency of working conditions, provision of storage cum preparation room is arranged in this kind of laboratory. There is provision of darkroom in this laboratory, which can be used in accordance with the needs and requirements, while the other portion is being furnished for serving as lecture cum laboratory room.

The main features of this kind of plan can be discussed with the help of following points:

ADVERTISEMENTS:

i. Provision of movable tables should be made in the room, which should have flat top by which students can make use of them for writing purpose also.

ii. In side benches, there can be provision of sinks, water and gas connection. The height of these benches should be window ledge by which light can be made use of in accordance with the requirement. Under these benches, cupboards can be provided where students can store their books and other materials safely.

iii. Demonstration table of the teacher should be placed at an appropriate distance from the door of dark room. In front of this table, a blackboard should be placed out on wall, having a dimension of 10’x4\ Teacher’s table should not be affixed with the wall but should be movable.

iv. There should be proper arrangement of almirahs on the walls in which various scientific apparatuses and equipments can be stored safely. There should be proper number of doors and windows in the room so that it can remain proper ventilated.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

The responsibility of school authorities do not come to an end with construction of a laboratory, but it is also necessary to take certain steps to ensure that laboratory is maintained carefully, mention of which are as follows:

a. Quality apparatuses should be purchased by the management otherwise; probabilities of getting accidents will increase.

b. Fixed place should be designated to each and every item; otherwise, laboratory cannot be organised systematically and orderly.

c. All the equipments and apparatuses should be kept on the racks by which students can make use of them immediately whenever needed.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

d. Lower parts of the shelves should be used to keep heavy items like cans of distilled water and iron stands.

e. It is on the working table racks that reagents and chemicals which are frequently used by students should be kept out.

f. It is necessary to put labels on the containers of all the chemicals.

g. After using, it is necessary to clean all the apparatus.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

h. Students should be instructed not to keep hot apparatus on the painted surfaces.

i. To prevent iron apparatus from rusting, they should be greased regularly.

j. Regular polish should be conducted on the items made up of wood.

k. Any kind of breakage or leakage should be managed timely.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Thus, by following all the above mentioned steps, it becomes possible to keep the experiments conducted by students safe.
