Notes on Curriculum for International Understanding

There are different types and quantum of knowledge, understanding, skills, attitudes, interests etc. which are to be developed for promoting international understanding. All this can be achieved with the help of a well-designed curriculum which provide suitable learning experience under the leadership of educational institutions.

The right type of knowledge and information positive attitudes, necessary skills desirable interests regarding different countries people, their ways of living, manners and customs, history and culture, problems and progress in various fields are to be given to students. Otherwise, ignorance in the world may lead to prejudice, confusion and misunderstanding.

These facts should be presented in true perspective and suitable quantum according to the age group and stage. Geography, History, Civics, Science, Mathematics, Language and Literature are the different subjects through which international understanding can be promoted.

The study of geography will give the knowledge about the people of different countries, their life styles, their vocations and hobbies etc. Human geography should be emphasized and inter­dependence of countries in Trade, Industry, Commerce and Communication should be impressed upon the minds of children.

Map helps in getting adequate knowledge about the location of different places and countries which can promote the feeling of strong relationship in the world.

(ii) History:

The purpose of history teaching is to form favourable attitudes towards various countries. Attempts are being made to remove the racial conflicts under glorification of any country or nation or personality from the history. Rather social and cultural aspects, exchange of ideas, spread of civilization, mutual trade, and commerce among various countries should be highlighted.

(Hi) Civics:

Civics not only helps the development of patriotism but also internationalism. It gives the knowledge about the political and civic organization and institutions within the country and abroad. The study about international bodies like UNO, UNESCO, etc. will enable students to acquire knowledge and understanding. This will promote international understanding among the students.

(iv) Science and Mathematics:

Science and mathematics should find an important place in the curriculum for international understanding. The growth of these subjects can very well reflect the Universal contributions and applications, logical or rational thinking and scientific attitudes can be developed satisfactorily.

(v) Language and Literature:

Language and literature are symbols of international co­operation and exchange of ideals. Every literature or even languages owes a lot to the contribution of various nations in the post. Literature deals with the quest of the human spirit, with trials and tribulations, joys and sorrows and sufferings. As such it appeals to all irrespective of cultural, political, religions and economic variations. It provides knowledge and insights and creats sympathy and compassion for different countries and mankind.
