Built-up Competitions

The base preparation for the main competition is known as build up competitions. During this step of preparation the primary objectives of training are to maintain general aerobic fitness and some degree of sport specific muscular strength and endurance.

Training sessions are characterized by moderate volume, low intensity and the implementation of a variety of cross training methods. It should be apparent that the development of a solid aerobic base is paramount in determining overall success of a given reason of intense training and competition. How one performs in the buildup competitions helps one gauge one’s ability in the main competition.

Main Competition

Main competition is real goal of the sportsman. It is the object which he has been preparing for since the first day of his training. Along with training, there are other factors to be kept in mind in order to prepare for the main competition. All athletes are nervous prior to competition, this is natural, but often it results in lack of confidence by the athlete. The aim of pre-competition preparation is to refocus the athlete so that they are positive and confident in their ability.

Day before Competition

For the preparation on this day following should be considerable:

1. The training should be light and easy-the work should be on technique.

2. The sportsman must agree with the coach on the objectives of the competition-focus and performance.

3. The athlete should pack all the equipment using an equipment checklist for the competition.

4. Organise food and drink required for the competition.

5. Have a carbohydrate dinner.

6. Watch a video of one’s own good performance.

7. Get 7-8 hours sleep.

Morning of Competition

At the morning of competition, one should allow plenty of time between waking and leaving for competition venue, and carry out light stretching before breakfast. He should conduct mental rehearsal of warm up and competitions. He must leave for the venue in time.

Pre-competition

Just before the competition, he must complete all formalities, e.g., registration, collect number, check event time, etc. He should avoid his competitors, and conduct relaxation and mental rehearsal programme. He should carry out his practiced pre-competition warm up programme. He should gather equipment required for the competition, and must report at appropriate time to the collection point of his event. He must keep warm, relaxed and focus on his objective for the competition.
