The District Inspector of Schools belongs to the class-II cadre of the education service. He comes to his post purely on the basis of promotion. Now steps have been taken for the direct recruitment of the District Inspectors by the’ P.S.C.
The District Inspector is responsible for the following duties and functions:
(i) The District Inspector is the local educational officer. His important duty and responsibility is the supervision of schools of all classes in his educational district with the exception of high schools and secondary training schools. He may visit these institutions at the request of the circle Inspector of Schools.
(ii) The District Inspector’s supervisory work is primarily for the middle schools in his district than the primary schools. He has the power of supervising the work of the Sub-Inspector of schools.

(iii) The power to recognize a primary school rests with the District Inspector.
(iv) He has the power to give final decisions in connection with the problem of transfer certificate of primary school students.
(v) He is to do some propaganda work by arranging interviews with the managing committees of the schools under his charge, with the parents and guardians of pupils to explain to them the necessity for regular and punctual attendance and to induce the people to be interested in education.
vi) The District Inspector must check the diaries of Sub-Inspectors, which contains information about the primary schools in each Sub-Inspector’s locality.

(vii) He is required to spend “150 days on tour.” During his tour programme, he should visit each middle school in his education district once a year. Besides, according to his convenience, he should inspect as many primary schools as he can.
(viii) He has the power to pass the establishment and contingent bills of government middle and middle English schools.
(ix) He is to sanction expenditure from the surplus balance of aided schools other than high schools.
(x) He is to sanction the purchase of library and prize books, furniture and teaching materials for all government schools. (Except high schools and secondary training schools).

(xi) He is to approve the list of holidays for government schools. (Except high schools and training schools.).
(xii) He is to pass bills of the scholarship holders.
(xiii) He has the power to transfer teachers from one school to another.
(xiv) He is to pass the T.A. bills of all officers.

(xv) He can appoint menials and to posts outside the grade or in L.S.E.S. teachers. He can sanction pensions to such officers.
(xvi) He is to award scholarships to primary students.
(xvii) He is to hold an annual conference of Sub-Inspectors. Headmasters of ME. Schools should be invited to this conference. It should continue for a period of two to three days. Criticism and demonstration lessons should be delivered by trained officers. The discussion should be confined to school life and work.
