The problem of protein-energy malnutrition disease can be countered by taking the following steps:

1. There should be large gap period (about 5 years) between the births of the two children, so that the first child can be breast fed for a long time. Breast feeding should be continued as long as possible. When the quantity of the mother’s milk decreases the child’s diet should be supplemented with appropriate protein rich foods.

2. Nursing (lactating) mother should be given adequate protein rich diet, so that she can produce sufficient milk for quite long period.

3. Working mothers should be provided long maternity leave.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

4. Young mothers should be properly educated about the dietary needs of the child.
