Why are detergents preferred to soap these days?

Soaps do not give lather with hard water while detergents can form lather with hard water. Soaps are sodium salts of fatty acids while detergents are sodium sulphates, salts of long chain hydrocarbons. These days, detergents are preferred to soaps as these make the washing easy and these have more cleansing action than soaps.
