The plant tissue culture is the thrust area of research in plant science, specifically for crop improvement programme. The branch of plant genetic engineering is amalgamated with plant tissue culture giving birth to a new branch known as Plant Biotechnology.
It handles both plant tissue culture and plant genetic engineering simultaneously. More attention on plant tissue culture is laid because the plant cells easily respond to in vitro culture and give interesting result.
The plant cells are totipotent, for which there have been tremendous success in generating differentiated plants from a cell or tissue. Novel plants with characters of two or more plants have been generated by combining plant tissue culture and biotechnology.
Again, it requires less sophistication to go through the experiment. Now plant tissue culture is considered as a basic tool in plant biotechnology.
