One of the promising tennis players, Nirupama Vaidyanathan was born on December 8, 1976 at Coimbatore in India. She started playing tennis at the age of 6.

As a junior player of India, her best ranking has been 35 in singles and 26 in doubles. She won the I.T.F. girls Singles tides in Thailand 93, India 93, Bangladesh 93 and Sri Lanka 93. She was also the member of the Asian squad touring Europe in 1994.

Nirupama has been the No.l player of India in the Federation Cup for past five years. She won all 4 gold medals at the South Asian Federation Games 1995, in the team event, individual singles, and doubles and mixed doubles events.

She was also a member of the World Youth Cup as a junior representing India in 1991 and 1992. She won medal in the mixed doubles at the Asian Games XIII, Bangkok, and December 1998 with Mahesh Bhupathi. Her best achievements also include the first-round win over Gloria Pizzichini at the 1998 Australian Open.
