La I an Amarnath was one of the most elegant players who served the Indian cricket when it was in its nascent stage. He was born on September 11, 1911 in Kapurthala, Punjab.

Amarnath was India’s first Test centurion who made 118 strokeful runs on his debut again England in 1933-34. However, he was in the team as an all-rounder. His accurate slow medium bowling of the wrong foot was an asset for the Indian team. He took enough wickets to be counted as a world class all-rounder.

But the high point of his career began when he was appointed the captain of the Indian cricket team to lead in Australia in 1946-47. The highlight of his captaincy was 2-1 win at home in India’s first series against Pakistan in 1951-52.

His sons Surinder and Mohinder went on to play Tests as well. After retirement Amarnath rendered his service to the Indian cricket as a Test selector. Later he became an entertaining and popular commentator, forthright as ever.
