Sri Aurobindo, a great personality is not only a spiritual Sadhak but also a freedom fighter. He was a philosopher as well as a political leader. Like an ancient yogi he desired the well- being of all without distinction of class, creed and colour. He, like a true “Yogi” was always in a mood of spiritual bliss or ecstasy amid all worldly efforts for regeneration of the Society and liberation of the Soul.

Sri Aurobindo Ghose was born on the 15th August, 1872 in Calcutta. His father Krishnadhan had desire to give English Education to son for which Aurobindo was sent to England for study when he was only seven years old. He displayed extraordinary genius during his long fourteen year stay in England. He refused to join ICS for which he was selected and returned to India in 1892 as he desired to lead a free academic life.

Sri Aurobindo joined the State Administrative Service at Baroda. There he learned Sanskrit, Bengali, Marathi, Gujurati and other Indian Languages to know the heritage of India. At the time of Bengal partition in 1905, for which he resigned from his post at Baroda and went to Calcutta and participated in politics. For his literary excellence he became the Editor of “Bande Mataram” and regularly wrote articles to “Karmayogin” and “Dharma” periodicals. He was imprisoned for several years for his revolutionary activities. After that, he remained politically silent. He changed his life to divine and settled in Pondicherry, where he spent the rest of his life. In 1914 M. Paul Richard and his wife Mira Richard came to Pondicherry. But Mira Richard remains in Pondicherry Asharam and became “The Mother”. Sri Aurobindo breathed his last on the 5th December 1950.
