A dedicated social worker from Maharashtra, Ramabai rose her voice against decadent Hindu customs, which she felt were particularly unjust to women. She relentlessly worked for the uplift of women. In 1889, she set up Sharda Sadan, an institution for the education of women. Later she established Mukti Sadan and Kripa Sadan to rehabilitate homeless women. She also wrote a number of books in Marathi and English to awaken social consciousness regarding the rights of women.
