Weaknesses of evolutionary theories are-

(i) The data supporting the location of societies along the series of stages were often inaccurate; with a society being placed in whatever stage best fitted the theory.

(ii) The sequence of stages was not truly fixed, as some societies have leapfrogged over intermediate stages directly into the industrial or communist stage and some have even moved ‘backward’ to an earlier stage.

(iii) The assumption that major social change ends when a society reaches the final stage seems naive. If change is a constant, can any set of arrangements ever be final?
