(i) Every tall building should have a minimum of two stair cases. Enclos­ing walls of the main stair case should have fire resistance interior. In multistory building, the location of stair case should be decided care­fully.

(ii) The distance an occupant has to travel to reach an exit should be 22.5m maximum. There should be exits sufficient to permit the prompt es­cape of occupants. Adequate and reliable illumination shall be pro­vided for all the exits.

(iii) Lifts and escalators should not be considered as exit.

(iv) A separate fire lift should be provided for use of fire brigade in the event of fire.

(v) The load bearing walls/columns should be of thicker sections and fire resistance of 2 hours, (type 3).

(vi) In case of wooden floors, thicker joists, space at greater distance apart should be used.

(vii) Wooden partition should be covered with metal and plaster, fire resist­ance of 1 hour, (type 4).

(viii) Walls should be plastered with fire resistance mortar.

(ix) Doors, windows, should be glazed and fitted with reinforced glass pan­els. Fire resistance 1/2 hours.

(x) Use metal frame for door with steel shutters.

(xi) In single storey the provision of an accessible window should be en­sured.

(xii) Fire bell alarm should be installed.

(xiii) In case of steel structure it will be necessary to encase the structure by the tiles or.

(xiv) Basement should be properly ventilated.

(xv) Provision for underground water storage tank of 1 to 2 lakh liters should be there.

(xvi) Fire extinguishers should be installed at suitable places.
