Normal amount of calories according to age, sex and occupation are advised.

Protein

About 60 to 83 gm are advised.

Fats

Intake of fats stimulates the flow of bile and also lubricates the lower bowel. Hence butter, ghee and cooking oils in reasonable quantities are beneficial for the patient. Fried food should be avoided.

Carbohydrate

A diet rich in bulk in the form of vegetables and fruits which are rich in un absorbable cellulose, and unrefined cereals which contain bran should be given.

Vitamins

Vitamins of B group, preferably as pure yeast, help some patients in regulating the bowel functions.

Fluids

A liberal amount of fluids, at least 10 glasses of water per day is advised. Warm fluid such as warm water or weak tea taken in the early morning on an empty stomach help some people to evacuate the bowel.

In spastic and obstructive constipation, one must start with low to medium-fiber diet and then go on to high-fiber diet, provided it suits the patient.

Treatment should also attempt correction of faulty food habits. One should follow regular bowel movement habits. The patient should be advised to take exercises for the development of abdominal muscles. Regular physical exercise is beneficial, especially for seden­tary workers. Mental worry and anxiety should be avoided.

Highly refined foods and foods which leave very little residue, such as maida, meat, rice and candies.
