Crocodile conservation:

There are three species of Crocodiles in India, (i) salt water or estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus porpsus), (ii) freshwater, swamp crocodile or mugger (C. plaustris) and (iii) gharial (Gavialis gangeticus).

The population of crocodiles declined due to illegal poaching as the skin is in great demand. In order to preserve the crocodiles the sale of the skin is legally banned. Several sanctuaries have been established. These include Krishna Sanctuary in Andhrapradesh, and chambal sanctuary including areas from U.P., M.P. and Rajasthan.
