Peptic ulcer may be confirmed by barium meal X-ray. Sometimes stool examination may also help in diagnosing the disease. Endoscopy of the upper gastrointestinal tract is also useful in detecting duodenal ulcers. Stool examination very often may reveal the presence of blood indicating bleeding from ulcers. In extreme cases where bleeding is severe the stools become black and it is called malena.
