When Jahangir died in 1627 AD, Khurram was away from the capital. Prince Shahryar at the instance of Nurjahan proclaimed himself emperor at Lahore with the help of Asaf Khan and Mahawat Khan Khurram became the king in 1628 AD. The real name of Shahjah was Khurram.

He was born at Lahore on 5th January, 1592 AD. The name of his mother was Jagat Gosai who was the daughter of Raja Udai Singh of Jodhpur. He was married to Arjumand Bano Begum in 1612 AD. She was the daughter of Asaf Khan. Asaf Khan was the brother of Nurjahan.

He was best known for his Deccan and foreign policies. Nizam Shahi of Ahmadnagar was brought under Mughal control during his reign in 1633 AD. He reconquered Qandhar in 1638 AD.

He was a great builder and is known for the promotion of art, culture and architecture during his time. He built a number of magnificent buildings. The war of succession among his sons started for throne during his period of illness. He died in captivity in 1666 AD. He was buried in Tajmahal beside his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.
