True education aims at developing the all-round personality of a student. Education should, therefore, result in the intellectual, moral and physical development of children.

Education and sports are correlated, while the former awakens the mind and kindles the light of knowledge, the latter will help shaping our physique. What reading will be for the mind, exercise would be for the body. Participation in sports refreshes the tense, muscles and nerves, which in turn, invigorates and strengthens our minds.

Sports help, according to Aristotle, in creating a sound mind in a sound body. Not only outdoor sports and games, even indoor pursuits like chess and playing cards require one’s full attention and concentration. They would serve as complete food for our mind.

Unfortunately, the existing system of education has confined to the four walls of the classroom. Just as a well- balanced diet contains the nourishing constituents in desirable quantities, a well-balanced personality requires desirable traits in the right proportions.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

So, sports are essential for developing a healthy and constructive attitude towards life. As a matter of fact, sports and education lend a rhythm to our life and participation in sport is a co- curricular rather to an extra-curricular activity.

A student, entering a playfield after intellectual labour for the day, feels free from fetters; s (he) is raring from the word ‘go’. Sports loosen his (her) limbs and relax the entire body system so that s (he) is well-prepared studying well over concentration.

Parents and teachers should not, therefore, put any restrictions on their wards when the latter show keen interest in sports activities. The need is only to balance sports with education for an overall development of their personality. This could result in healthy, vigorous, cheerful and optimistic individuals, ready to brace odds in life and perform excellently in various spheres. It is also the duty of the government of the day, to provide better sports facilities in our educational institutions.

Sports also leave us no time to waste in useless pursuits or for contracting such habits as smoking, drinking, drugs, eve-teasing, or violent demonstrations, etc. They do canalize our dormant energies in the right perspective. Sports should, therefore, form an indispensable part of our education.
