The salient features of our Constitution are: (1) It is the longest in the world; (2) It reconciles Parliamentary Sovereignty with the Judicial Supremacy; (3) It is rigid as well as flexible; (4) It provides Fundamental Rights and the Constitutional Remedies; (5) It proclaims the sovereignty of the people; (6) It is Federal in form but Unitary in spirit; (7) it has introduced Universal Franchise; (8) It incorporates Directive Principles of State Policy.

The Fundamental Rights give certain rights to the citizen which cannot be taken back or abridged. Right to equality, right to freedom of speech, right against exploitation, etc. are some of those rights. Our Constitution also lists some Fundamental Duties which includes abiding by the constitution, promote harmony, etc. The Directive Principles of State Policy gives guidelines to the States to manage their affairs. Every citizen must know about these things. It is our most sacred “Book of Rules.”
