Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights. The festival falls on the day of the new moon in October. On this occasion, the houses, the temples, and public places are decoratively illuminated with rows of lamps.

Glamorous fireworks are exhibited which add beauty to the festival. The illumination signifies the rays of hope and prosperity. It is a festival of merriment during which the Hindus exchange good wishes and greetings among themselves. They distribute sweetmeats and gifts to friends and relatives as a gesture of love and affection.

The inner idea of the festival is to remove the darkness of the mind, and look for the brightness in life. Man must forget the evil thoughts and be kind and compassionate to all.

Thus the Diwali festival is very popular among the people. It is more a social gesture than a religious ritual. So even the non Hindus are sometimes found to celebrate and enjoy the Diwali festival.
