The present Prime Minister of Pakistan, Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani was nominated by the Pakistan People’s Party (P.P.P.) with the aid of coalition associates. He became the Prime Minister on the 25th of March, 2008 as he took the oath of office from the previous President Pervez Musharraf. He is presently also the Vice Chairmen of his own Political Party. Yousaf Raza Gillani is also the previous speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan and an earlier Federal Minister. He became a part of the PPP quickly after the Junejo government which was after spending a brief period with the Muslim League.

He was born on the 9th of June 1952 in Karachi, Pakistan. Gillani was part of a powerful Shia family of Multan. His father was a well-known descendent of Syed Musa Pak, who was a divine leader of the Sufi order. Gillani received his early childhood education from St. Marry School and La Salle High School situated in Multan. In the year of 1970 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and he also obtained a Master’s degree in Journalism from the University of Punjab.

Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani entered into Politics through the stand of the Muslin League of Pakistan in the year of 1978, during the Martial Rule of Generla Zia-ul-Haq. Gillani also held the position of a cabinet member during the 3 year governance of Prime Minister Muhammad Khan Junejo. Soon after he left the Muslim League he became a part of the Pakistan People’s Party in the year of 1988. At this time he again was a cabinet minister in the era of Benazir Bhutto, he was the minister of Tourism (1989-1990) and the Minister of Housing and Works (Jan 1990 – Aug 1990).

During the government of Benazir Bhutto Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani became the speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan from the years 1993 – 1996. He maintained in this position up until February 1997. Gillani has been a consistent source of support to the PPP, specifically during times of hurdles and that has given him a special place and esteem in the party. He is viewed as a respectable and honorable politician, especially after his years of commitment as a speaker of the National Assembly.

Because of his honorable position in politics, he was a nominee from the PPP for the position of Prime Minister of Pakistan on March 22nd, 2008. This was decided after detailed consultation within the members of the party and its associates. The news was publicized of him becoming the Prime Minister of Pakistan later on the same day. He was officially elected as the Prime Minister of Pakistan on the date March 28, 2008 by the Parliament. His oppose, Chaudry Pervez Elahi of PML (Q) was beaten by a score of 264 to 42. Gillani was then sworn to office by the former President. Mr. Pervez Musharraf on March 25th and he won an undisputed vote of confidence in the Parliament on March 29th.
