The culture of a country is the accumulated intellectual, emotional and spiritual wealth of that nation. Our is a secular country. People of different religions, cultures, castes, sects and creeds live in India. All people have the freedom to practice the religion on their own choice, without any interference from state. Thus there is lot of diversity experienced in India. But there is a unity in such diversity also. The secular character of the Indian policy was recognized and incorporated in the Constitution at the time of independence.

In spite of presence of several diverse forces at work India has been successful in maintaining its secular character. One

As India is a democratic state and the concept of democracy envisages freedom to the citizens in all their activities. So much so, that different types of freedoms are made inviolable by having been enshrined in the Constitution under the heading Fundamental Rights.

But there are such events in the history of India, which show that all communities have not always lived in peace all over the country. Hindu-Muslim riots have broken out and caused great loss to human life and property. Some places are vulnerable to communal riots.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

If the two communities are hostile to each other, there are some politicians that take advantage of the hostility and that may spark the riot. Each political party wants to maintain its vote bank for winning election and thus plays with the feeling of people and exploits their communal sentiments.

But these riots do not mean end of communal harmony. Life does return to normally there is no ill-will between the communities. By and large they such fellow feeling would not have been there the different communities could not have been living as a single bound unit.

We can only say that secularism can be strengthened by the leaders of the two communities taking upon themselves to instill feelings of brotherhood and friendless among their respective communities. They should form peace communities to see that peace is not disturbed.
