Qualifications Required for the Office of President of India

A candidate for the Office of President must have the following qualifications:

(i) He must be a citizen of India.

(ii) He must be 35 years or above in age.

(iii) He must possess all the qualifications prescribed for the election of members of Parliament.

(iv) He must not hold any office of profit under central, state or local self- governments. It is noteworthy that the offices of President, Vice-President, Governor, Ministers, MPs and MLAs are not offices of profit. However, if someone holding any of the above mentioned office is elected President, he will have to give-up the office.

(v) President cannot remain an MP or MLA. If he is either an MP or an MLA he will have to relinquish the office.

(vi) Along with duly filled up nomination paper, he will deposit a security for Rs. 15,000.

(iii) His candidature must be proposed by 50 and seconded by another 50 members of the Electoral College.
