Maha Shivratri falls on the 13th day of Magh and is observed a fast in honour of Shiva. The legend behind this festival is that a hunter who due to anxieties connected with his occupation had to keep vigil on this particular night without even knowing that it was sacred to Shiva and was converted into a sage and carried by Shiva himself to his paradise. The main feature of the festival is the large fairs held at the river banks to which pilgrims flock in thousands.
