Ground water pollution occurs by the infiltration of toxic substances from refuge dumps, fertilizers, pesticides, polluted tanks and ponds, and leakage of skeptic tanks and sewer drains. It is also caused by the infilling of city and industrial garbage in the mineshafts and quarries. The main pollutants are in the form of Fl, CI, arsenic, hardness etc. The level of pollution is affected by the characteristics of the soil, nature of rainfall and depth of the water table. Thus areas with sandy soils, heavy rainfall and high water table are more susceptible to such pollution. Many parts of the country are exposed to the problem of ground water pollution. Since this water is used for drinking purposes it has posed a serious problem of health hazards to the people.
