One of India’s greatest musicians M.S. Subbulakshmi was born on 16th September 1916 at Madurai. From her childhood she was fond of singing. At a young age, she started giving solo performances on stage. Soon, she became very popular. She also began acting in films. One of her most popular films was Meera. This film captivated audiences all over the country. After quitting films, she again took to her first love—singing.

M.S. Subbulakshmi’s singing has won the praise of stalwarts like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Sarojini Naidu, Hariprasad Chaurasia Ali Khan. For her service to music, she has been honoured with the Padma Bhushan, Vibhushan award and India’s highest civilian award—the Bharat Ratna.
