1. A School Function

Last month, a function was held at our school. It is held in the first week of December every year. The Education Minister was invited to give away prizes. Everything was arranged properly. The school was decorated well. All the students were in their dresses. The chief guest came at 11 o’clock. He was given a warm welcome. Our principal received him at the gate. The sports teacher read out the names of the boys and girls who won the prizes. The Minister gave away the prizes to the students. He was sitting beside the Principal. After the prize distribution he delivered a nice speech. In his speech he appreciated the performance of the students. He highlighted the importance of education and discipline in life. He told us to work hard in life. He also encouraged the students to inculcate good qualities so that we may be good citizens. At the end of the function one of our teachers extended vote of thanks. He expressed his thanks for his coming to our school. The function lasted for three hours. It was a nice day. We enjoyed it.

2. My Town

I live in Patna. It is my native town. It is a big town. It is situated on the banks of the river Ganga. It is the capital of Bihar. It is the most densely populated town of Bihar. Patna is a religious and historical place. It is the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth guru of the Sikhs. It is widely known for the remains of Nalanda University, an ancient centre of learning. It has great archaeological importance. Patna is famous for Gol Ghar. It is a semi-circular building. It was built by the English. In pre-independence era it was used as granary. Patna is today a big centre of education and learning. There are many engineering, medical and other professional institutions in Patna. Children from remote areas come here for education. Rajgir, a centre of power and learning during the ancient period, is located at a little distance from here. Tourists from all over the country visit this place. Patna is a centre of power today. There is the High Court, the Legislative Assembly and offices of many big institutions. It is well-connected by air and rail route. I am proud of my town.

3. Hostel Life

Hostel life is very different from home life. It is an important part of student life. Hostel life does not have homely comforts. It is known for discipline and hard labour. Hostel life makes us self-dependent. We have to depend on ourselves. There are none to attend us when we are in trouble. Hostel life develops in us a habit of trust, cooperation and mutual understanding. It inculcates in us a habit of healthy competition. In hostel we have to take our food in time. We have to be very sincere and punctual in our work. We have to go to bed in time and leave the bed in time. We need to be much regulated during hostel life. Life in a hostel is run by rules which are very useful to make us a good citizen. Qualities developed during hostel life serve us for the whole life.

4. School Gardener

Romesh Chandra is my school gardener. He has a lot of knowledge about gardening. He knows how to take care of plants. He takes great care of them. He knows how they grow and what they are good for. He has good knowledge of soils and how to make them to suit different plants. He is well aware of the changes in season. He takes care of the plants according to the changes in season. He knows when to sow seeds and when the flowers will come out. He is aware of when the plants require manures and fertilizers, when to do watering. Romesh has all the qualities of a good gardener. He is hardworking, patient and is foresighted. He is very regular and consistent in his work. He plans well ahead of the changing seasons. The garden presents an attractive sight all over the year. The credit for all this goes to him.

5. Student Life

Student life is a very important phase of human life. It is a life of making oneself. It is the formative period of life. The foundation of a human being is laid during the student life. What a man turns to be when he grows up is the result of the qualities inculcated during the student life. In student life we should try to learn good habits. We should learn good manners. We should be kind, considerate and polite. A student life is the care-free period of life. We are happy and free from anxieties in student life. It is a life of freedom. But a good student is very aware of his time. He makes best use of it. The time utilized properly during this period helps him to be successful in life when he grows up. So we should try to build our future. We should try to build our character. Only then we have a good society and good nation.

6. The Radio

The radio is a gift of science. It is an important means of mass communication. It was invented by great Italian scientists

Marconi. It is one of the cheapest means of mass communication. Even a lower middle class man can have a radio set. We can hear songs, news, commentary, cultural programmes, discussions and debates on radio. Radio is an important means of entertainment and information. A radio is a very good teacher. It is a good medium of education. It adds to our knowledge. The radio is an audio medium. We can hear about the happenings of all over the world on radio. The radio is accessible even in remotely backward areas. The radio is of different sizes and prices. Some radios are electric set while some are battery set. The radio is a portable means of communication. We can carry it wherever we like to take it.

Thus, the radio is a useful thing.

7. Childhood

Childhood is an important phase of human life. It is the best period of human life. It is the period of life when one is free from any responsibility, cares and- concerns. A child is loved and cared by all. All his needs are taken care of by his parents. His parents are there to look after him. He gets everything without giving or doing anything. A child is free from lie and deception. He is an embodiment of innocence. He can do whatever he likes. He can say anything to anybody. He is readily excused even if he does anything wrong. Nobody takes ill of what a child says. A child enjoys perfect freedom. Even his meaningless chatter is a source of joy and pleasure to all. A child takes delight in building castles of sand and floating Paperboat. Running after a butterfly and catching it gives Pleasure. All the beauties of nature are a constant source of amusement and achievement to him. Childhood is after all the formation period of life. It is the time when foundations of good values, morals and principles are laid down. A child turns out to be what he is taught in his childhood. Thus, it is the responsibility of the teachers and parents that good values are inculcated in him so that he may turn out to be a good man and a good citizen. Certainly, it is the golden period, the sweet memories of which become a constant source of pleasure to man throughout his life.

8. Ganga

The Ganga is the most important river of India. It is one of the longest rivers. It is a perennial river. It is about 2,500 km long. It is held in high esteem by the Hindus. They believe that it was brought on earth by Bhagirathi. It rises from Gangotri glacier in the Himalayas. It flows through U.P., Bihar and Bengal. It falls in the Bay of Bengal. The Ganga enters the plains at Haridwar. When it reaches Allahabad it is joined by Yamuna. The Ganga is a symbol of rich Indian culture and tradition. The Hindus believe that all sins can be washed away by taking a dip in the Ganga. A few drops of Ganga Jal are poured into the mouth of a dying person. The last wish of a Hindu is to die somewhere on its bank. Many towns are situated on the banks of the Ganga. Haridwar, Allahabad, Varanasi, Patna and Munger are located on the banks of the river Ganga. These places have great religious value. Religious fairs like Kumbh fair and Ganga fair are held on the banks of the river. The river is good for agriculture as well. The places near the river are fertile. But the river becomes a cause of distress also. Floods are an annual feature. Thousands of villages and cities are swept away and ruined leading to huge loss of life and property. This Ganga becomes furious and a terror to the people. All human efforts appear futile before the fury of the Ganga during the floods. However, it is a useful
has tremendous navigation potential. If exploited it can be a good source of revenue.

9. Winter Season

The winter season comes after the rainy season. It gives relief from the mosquitoes of the rainy season. People are healthy and active in spite of cold. This season is known for fruits, vegetables and flowers of different kind. Winter has charms of its own. Lying in bed till late in the morning and enjoying the warmth give great delight. People eagerly wait for the sunrise. They like to bask in the sun in the day and warm themselves by the fire in the evening and night. However, it is a season of the rich. They have electric heaters to heat their rooms. They have woolen clothes, muffs, furs, gloves and socks to keep themselves warm. But the season is equally painful for the poor. They do not wear proper clothes to keep themselves warm. They have nothing to keep themselves warm. Lots of poor people have to spend their nights on the pavements under the open sky. Though government makes arrangement for these people they are not so sufficient to make their needs fulfill. During the winter, the days are short and nights are long. The season is good for study. Fog and mist are common phenomena. Sometimes fogs are so dense that visibility declines sharply. Trains and flights get late. Often they have to be cancelled due to low visibility. In hilly terrains there is snowfall. When there is snowfall the temperature falls below zero particularly in northern areas of the country. This time life comes to a standstill. Despite all these unpleasantness, winter is a season of feasting. It is a season to enjoy.

10. Road Safety

Road safety is very important for all of us. But it is a much neglected discipline in our country. People do not have regards for the rules of traffic. Overspeeding, overtaking, jumping red lights, etc. are very common in India. Whether it is in the metropolitan cities, small cities, towns or countryside, people have no sense of traffic and the rules of the road. This lack of road sense is a cause of road accidents in India. Every year thousands of people die in road accidents. It is a major cause of unnatural deaths in India. In recent years use of mobile phone while driving has added to this problem. Drunken driving is another important cause of accident. Decline in social mores and values have also been an important factor leading to the road accidents. Increasing incidents of road rage show our disregard to safety rules. People begin to fight on the road on trivial issues. Sometimes it leads to the tragic incidents of death and killing. Lack of traffic sense denotes our overall lack of civic sense in public life. Despite awareness programmes and police action against those violating the traffic rules, the incidences of road accidents are on the rise. So long as we do not learn to behave like responsible aware citizens, nothing significant is going to change. It is us, the common people, who need to be aware and responsible to make things happen.

11. Water

Water is a prime natural resource. It is a basic human need and a precious national asset. We cannot think of life without water. We use water for bathing, cleaning, washing, drinking cooking, etc. Water is vital for agriculture. We cannot realise the full potential of agriculture without water. Water is equaled important for industrial activities. No industry can be set up without water. Growing urbanisation with its modern lifestyle has also enhanced the resources. Water table is fast declining. It is a cause of major concern. Though a big portion of the earth is covered with water, but only a small portion of it can be used for various human activities. Reckless and injudicious use has contributed to water crisis. India is abundantly rich in water resources. But water is a rare commodity in many parts of the country. It becomes a cause of quarrel. There are fights for water. Women have to travel miles to get water. The distribution of water is uneven. It is the need of the hour to conserve water so as to ensure its equal, balanced and adequate supply to those parts of the country which are water deficient. Harvesting of rain water holds special significance in this regard. Above all, we need to be judicious and rational in terms of water use.

12. Education in India

Education is an important tool of development. It helps in understanding of the people and place around us. Education helps in unraveling the mystery of nature. It helps to remove superstition. It helps in the development of logic and reason. Education primarily involves acquisition, interlinking and transmission of the knowledge and understanding. It enables to understand and improve the working of our society. It creates condition for a better life. In India, education is the primary responsibility of state government. Most of the educational development plans are formulated and ‘implemented with the assistance of Central Government. To spread education our government has made primary education free and compulsory. It is due to the efforts of the government that literacy has spread significantly. To promote education among the weaker section, the government has introduced the nude-day meal scheme which has been very successful.

Reservations have been given to the weaker section. Girl students and children belonging to scheduled castes and scheduled tribes get special benefits in certain states. There are technical and professional institutes which provide special facilities for specialised courses. Education needs to groom the personality of the students. It should inspire them to be disciplined and a man of character, conviction and integrity. Above all, education needs to be vocationalised. A student after completing his education should have ensured employment. Then it will serve as an important tool to social change and development.
