The British rule had a far reaching impact on the Indian society in the following ways:

1. Some British administrators, through social legislation, tried to reform the Indian society of its ills like the Sati, the child infanticide, low status of women etc.

2. The educational system was reorganized. Though it was undertaken to train the Indians for clerical and lower jobs, it brought the people in close contact with ideas of democracy and nationalism.

3. It brought about emergence of new social classes e.g. the middle class, the industrialists, the working class, the professional people etc
