The Surat Split was of immense historical importance.

Firstly, the unity in the national movement was jeopardized as a result of the Split. It also weakened the strength of the movement.

Secondly, disunity within the Congress was utilized by the British government to its advantages. The British by rallying the Moderates further widened the difference.

Thirdly, the British government sought to place the Moderates by the introduction of the Morley- Minto Reforms of 1909.

Fourthly, it may be said that after the succession of the Extremists from the Congress the Moderate leaders failed to infuse new blood into the organization. On the other hand, the Extremist leaders like Tilak, Bipin Chandra, Lajpat Rai, etc. created a stir among the youths of India with the new mission of extremism.
