In ancient times India made great progress in the field of Science and Mathematics. Our astronomers and scientists could work out the length of days and nights. They could tell the exact time and date of solar and lunar eclipses. Arya Bhatta was one of such great scientists. He lived some 1600 years ago. He made the great discovery that the Earth moves round the Sun.

He wrote books on astronomy. These books tell us about his great discoveries. When India launched her first satellite in 1975, it was named Arya Bhatta to honour this great scientist and astronomer.

C. V. Raman :

Dr. C.V. Roman was one of the greatest Indian scientists of the modern times. His full name was Chandrashekhar Venkataraman. He was born at Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu in 1888.

From his childhood he had a great interest in Science. He was interested in scientific research. He became professor of research at Calcutta University. He took keen interest in the study of light and sound.

He made a great discovery on the spread of light. He made this discovery known to the world in March 1928. This great discovery is known as ‘Raman Effect’. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. He is the second Indian to have received Nobel Prize. He continued researches and in 1943, he set up ‘Raman Research Institute’ at Bangalore. He inspired many scientists for research. India honored him by awarding ‘Bharat Ratna’ the highest award on him.

Homi Jehangir Bhabha :

Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha was a great scientist of modern India. He was born in 1909. .He went to Cambridge for higher studies in 1927. He joined the Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore in 1939. In his early career Bhabha solved the ‘mystery’ of cosmic rays and became world famous.

He joined the Tata Institute of Funda­mental Research when it was set up. This institute was the best place for research in atomic energy and in basic sciences. He was the genius behind the Indian Atomic Energy Programme. He was elected the President of the first United Nations Conference on Nuclear Energy for Peaceful Purposes.

Homi J. Bhabha was also a great painter and artist. His works of art are found in the major art galleries of the world. He was a Nuclear Physicist, Space Scientist, Micro-Biologist and Electronics expert combined. This great scientist died in an air accident.
