The story of freedom movement in Orissa has two district trends. The first trend exhibits the resurgence of people of Orissa against British imperialism. The second trend records the movement of the people in the Princely States known as Garjats against the misrule of their autocratic rulers.

People’s movement in Garjat states, otherwise known as Prajamandal Movement, which paved the path clear for the integration of princely states with Orissa constitutes the romantic story of people’s struggle against despotism. In the evolution of democratic movement in the States of Orissa the prajamandal Movement contributed to a great extent.
