A nine-power treaty was concluded on 6th February 1922. America, Britain, France, Japan, Italy, China, Netherlands, Belgium, and Portugal signed it. According to this treaty Japan accepted the principle of open-door policy of America in China.

The nine countries which signed on it expressed their faith in the sovereignty, freedom and territorial unity and assured to give a chance for the establishment of a durable and organised government.

It was also decided that all the nations would be free to develop their trade and commerce in China but no country would possess any privilege in China. It is obvious that this treaty recognised the neutrality of China which raised her international stature.

However, the foreign ruler continued to exploit China this way or that way. Consequently, the annoyance of China and Japan was quite natural.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

America was greatly benefited by this treaty because the recognition to the open- door policy was like a Magna Charta for China.
