Textile mills producing cotton, woolen and synthetic cloth are located in Mumbai, Ahmadabad, Amritsar, Kanpur, Chennai and Surat. Textile making is the oldest industry in our country. Iron and steel is the backbone of all industries.

Steel mills are located at Jamshedpur and Bokaro in Jharkhand; Durgapur in West Bengal, Bhilai in Chhattisgarh and Rourkela in Orissa. Jute mills are located in and around Kolkata.

We have many other large-scale industrial units manufacturing cement, automobiles, chemicals, fertilizers, sugar, paper, electronic goods, and telephones, defence equipment, etc. Our country has made rapid progress in almost every industry since independence. Today, lakhs of people work in different kinds of industries.

Every year more and more big industrial units are being set up in different parts of India. Industries have increased the prosperity of our country.
