It is very important to understand how we should conduct ourselves in our day to day life. There are certain conventional rules of personal behavior in polite society. They are called good manners.

Good manners are an integral part of a cultured man’s personality. They are an embellishment of his character. They show what kind of family he comes of, how he has been brought up and whether he has learnt and cultivated good habits. A well-mannered person will talk politely to others, respect his elders and be considerate to the young. He will be punctual, disciplined and helpful.

He will not associate himself with anything indecent, hurtful or destructive. Using the words ‘excuse me’, ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, offering one’s seat in the bus to a lady or an old man, helping the blind to cross the road, all these may be small things, but they certainly elevate a person morally.

Similarly, observing table manners while eating, not entering somebody’s room without knocking and not breaking in on others’ conversation are pleasing habits. Good manners not only give a favorable impression to others, but also fill one’s heart with contentment.
