Some form of social and national service should be made as integral part of education at all stages. This should be done by students’ participation in the programmes of community living on the school campus and of community development of national reconstruction.

There are various opportunities for community work in the class room on the school campus and in ‘the school hostels. In many schools, the students undertake cleaning the school rooms and school premises, leveling the playground, preparing and maintaining a school garden polishing the furniture, whitewashing the walls and painting the doors and windows.

A well-trained teacher, who maintains good relations with the local community, can easily find appropriate situations connected with public sanitation. The school children can help to the old and sick in simple village improvement projects. At the secondary stage, the children are more mature and it is possible to organize programmes of community service at a higher level.

It is no easy task to organize an effective programme of social service for all secondary schools in the country. To begin with some selected schools of high quality may organize the National Service Programme on a voluntary basis. The training schools and colleges may take the lead in this regard.
