A superstition means a belief which has no rational basis. It is born out of man’s credulity regarding the supernatural and his misdirected reverence for the unknown powers. An irrational fear of the mysterious leads man to hold a particular opinion and to practice a particular ritual. Gradually the nature and effects of a thing become fixed and deep-rooted in the minds of the people.

Superstitions have existed from time immemorial and they are wide-spread and universal. Even highly educated people are found to be superstitions in some matters and in varying degrees. Different beliefs prevail in different lands or regions. For example, if a crow caws on a house-top, the arrival of a guest is expected by many. An itching on the right palm portends some gain for a man and a twitching of his left eyelid is considered ominous.

If a cat crosses somebody’s path, his mission is supposed to be foredoomed. A sudden sneeze stops a man ready to set off on a journey. The shooting of an owl or the screaming of a dog is believed to herald some misfortune, the number thirteen is considered unlucky. Certain day are thought to be auspicious for starting new ventures. Hair-dressers and butchers don’t do any business on Tuesdays.

Such instances are legion. Superstitions can do a great harm, if they are applied to our day to day life with blind obduracy a scientific temper and the light of proper education can nullify their effect. We must remember that what ultimately counts is our will-power, our unflinching courage and the relentless pursuit of our goals.
