A moonlit night looks like a lake of silver. In the day the world is a lake of gold. The dazzling light of the sun gives way to the soft light of the moon at night. The moon exercises a peculiar fascination on our hearts and heads. The entire outlook of man undergoes a transformation.

Hi the villages the moonlight has a particular attraction. During summer you cannot enjoy a village walk under the burning sun. At night you cannot walk since it is dark. But a moonlit night is a wonderful time to move out and enjoy nature in its purity.

During such a night my friend and I used to walk from one end of our village to the other end. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We started at sunset and walked off to a place some six or seven miles away. Not only did we reach the other place thoroughly refreshed, but acquired a poetic uneasiness to make couplets.

In a moonlit night, the beauties of Nature thrill everybody. The peacocks whistle wonderfully. Their whistles can be heard from many furlongs away. Other animals also enjoy the scene. The dogs are smarter. The jackals are less hoarse in their howls. The frogs leap up with joy. Only the owls and the bats are a bit sullen.

Most beautiful by moonlight is the ancient tower of our village. It acquires a beautiful shape and a new mystery. It glistens white in the silvery light of the moon. The streets look as if washed with milk and the trees, bushes and flowers spread sweet smell all around.

Moonlight exercises a special charm in a railway journey as trees flit by like sentries on duty. The lakes and mountains glisten in the distance. The fields have a fairyland appearance. Everything which is dull and drab by day becomes beautiful in the light of the moon. As Shelley said:

“The orbed maiden with white fire laden, whom mortals call the moon.”

The moon has fascinated poets down the centuries, this is what George Croly wrote about the moo:-
