India is a land of diversities. In most of the countries of the West, People have one standard dress but in India there is an endless variety of dress worn by the people in different parts of the country. The dress does not proclaim an Indian. Free India’s national prestige requires that there should be a uniform dress for the entire country. It will be a step towards national integration.

Our headmaster is a strict disciplinarian. He has a flair for uniforms. He was the first in our city to introduce in the school a common uniform for one and all. It consists of brown shoes, white socks, khaki shorts, a white shirt and a white Gandhi cap for summer and khaki pants instead of khaki shorts and a navy blue blazer over a white shirt for winter. The Sikhs can wear a white turban instead of a white Gandhi cap.

Ever since the introduction of this uniform, the school discipline has improved a lot. The boys look smart and active. A visitor to the school feels impressed with the boys uniform. Boys have begun to take pride in the school uniform. The inequality between the rich and the poor students has disappeared.

All are dressed alike and no boy has any feelings of inferiority complex because of his poor dress. It is a sight to see the fifteen hundred boys of the school at mass drill in uniform or going for route march on Saturday. Every passerby stops to have a look at the impressive spectacle that the boys, marching in uniform like soldiers, present. When the boys in uniform play hockey, football, or cricket, they look majestic.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Truancy has decreased. A boy of the school, wandering in the streets or hovering around a cinema hall, is at once detected. A student of the school selling a stolen book is also detected in no time. A boy of the school quarrelling with a boy or boys of another school also comes to notice.

A school uniform also helps the boys develop a national outlook. Our school uniform is simple and inexpensive. A school uniform goes a long way to prevent the boys from falling a prey to fashion in dress or from going in for costly dress. It brings about unity among the boys. It creates in them a pride for the school. It inculcates habits of economy so essential in a poor country like India.

It is most desirable that there should be one national dress for the whole country. It will be a big step towards equality and national integration.
