How do we like a teacher? As a matter of fact we like some qualities of a teacher. As a teacher we require a certain amount of teaching competencies such as the capacity to plan instructional sessions, to prepare appropriate notes, to conduct group and individualized instruction, and to assess the progress of the student.

We must have sufficient ability in diagnostic and evaluation skills such as ability to gather and analyse data related to student behaviour to design, develop and administer appropriate instruments to measure student development and the ability to interpret objectively the findings obtained through the use of such tools.

To be an effective teacher we must have knowledge (conceptual skills) in the subject for which we are going to teach. If we lack competence in the discipline, we cannot face our students with confidence and motivate them to learn the required concepts, skills and attitudes. The first thing required of a teacher is to have a knowledge base and pertaining to our field of specialization.

Along with the knowledge of the discipline a teacher is expected to develop certain amount to professional skills such as planning! Preparation, behaviour interventions and instruction we must be able to carry out instruction in accordant with the specific needs of students.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

It is also expected from a teacher to facilitate student learning by using precise, remedial, compensatory and realistic teaching techniques. We may ask the questions of different levels through the ability of the students.

Interpersonal skills is the another feature of a good teacher. We should develop the ability to communicate with the students clearly and precisely, to identify student concern and needs, to respond to students with an open and stable attitude, to demonstrate self- confidence and dealing with them and to interact with them in ways that arc adaptable.

Organizational competency is another asset of a teacher. As a teacher, we must be able to manage the material resources available in our classroom and plan and utilize different equipments. It helps us to manage the classroom and facilitates our work.

The ability to inspire and motivate the pupils is the important one. We must know that a major obstacle to learn is fear-fear of failure, fear of criticism and fear of appearing stupid. As a teacher we must learn to tolerate mistakes. Instead of chiding a student we should try to find out strong points in each student and give them the required opportunity and motivation to promote their growth and development.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

A teacher should also possess a certain amount of diagnostic and evaluation skills. A teacher should be able to collect data related to the student behaviour, analyze student misbehaviour in the classroom and identify the causes of such misbehaviour. He/she must be able to assess the personal history of the student and indentify behavioural characteristics.
